The Massachusetts Legislature is still smarting from being named the least efficient state legislature in the country, as well as one of the least transparent. This legislative inertia and opacity also comes at a time when the state needs swift action to protect citizens against a rapacious federal government — yet as of last week, the Legislature had voted on only 11 bills this session.
On a quiet side street right behind the Burlington Mall, immigrants are placed together in cells inside a featureless office building with no sign out front. People are detained here, sometimes for days, and sleep on a cold floor under Mylar blankets. There are no showers, no windows, no soap, no outdoor time, and no visitors. Community activists are standing up to say this injustice is wrong.
